HEBREW CONGREGATION OF SOMERS RECEIVES GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE MULTIGENERATIONAL PROGRAMMING

Somers, NY – December 28, 2020 – Hebrew Congregation of Somers Rabbi Shoshana Leis and Education Director Jill Liflander have recently received grants from the Jewish Education Project that will fund innovative programming for all ages.

Rabbi Leis’ grant is for a new project – Building B’nai Mitzvah that Honor Neurodiversity, created in partnership with Moving Traditions. The goals of the project are to:

  • Uplift, amplify and encourage the voices and visions of neurodiverse/twice-exceptional (2e) teens
  • Provide training for clergy and build a network of Jewish families seeking supportive, strength- and talent-based B’nai Mitzvah opportunities for neurodiverse teens
  • Support relationship-based individualized learning and social-emotional support for the B’nai Mitzvah journey.

Liflander’s grant is for Sofas, Our Sanctuary, a series of virtual Jewish storytelling workshops where multigenerational participants can share their stories, with guidance from professional Jewish storytellers. The goal is to deepen and explore the experience of “sanctuary” at a time when all synagogue activities are held remotely.

Northern Westchester’s only Reconstructionist synagogue, Hebrew Congregation of Somers draws members from Somers, Yorktown, North Salem, Mahopac and Goldens Bridge. Reconstructionists approach Judaism with deep consideration of the past and a passion to relate it to the present, and have originated many of the core innovations of today’s Judaism. For more information, email Rabbi Leis, call 914-248-9532 or explore the rest of this website.
