Lunch and Learns

After services on Shabbat mornings, we gather for deeper study of the week’s Torah portion. We explore different perspectives and insights and how to integrate the lessons of the portion into our lives. People with various levels of knowledge generally attend and have lively, respectful and interesting discussions. We actively seek out diverse opinions.

Classes

In 5781 (2020-21) we will take a deep dive into Jewish ethics and their application to our lives today in a series of classes led by Rabbi Leis. Topics will include the ethics of speech and medical ethics. These classes are suitable for all, with no prerequisites.

We also offer periodic classes for serious learners on diverse topics, from Abraham Joshua Heschel and modern Jewish philosophy to introduction to the Talmud and introduction to prayer to the history of liturgy. In 5780 we studied the Hartman Institute’s course Together & Apart, which addresses on one of the most pressing issues facing the Jewish world today: how we move from being a people with no permanent home to one with two homes.

Learning everywhere

We include some teaching and learning in most of our activities, such as services and committee meetings. The Hebrew school offers gatherings of parents to discuss parenting with Jewish values.
